AYURVEDA"THE GODS OWN TREATMENT"

"Ayurveda"

Ayurveda: India's traditional, natural system of

medicine that has been practiced for more than

5,000 years. Ayurveda provides an integrated

approach to preventing and treating illness

through lifestyle interventions and natural

therapies. Ayurvedic theory states that all

disease begins with an imbalance or stress in the

individual's consciousness. Lifestyle

interventions are a major ayurvedic preventive

and therapeutic approach. There are ten ayurveda

clinics in North America, including one

hospital-based clinic that has served 25,000

patients since 1985.

Rather than providing a quick-fix solution by

Principles Of Ayurveda

Ayurveda represents the ancient Indian art of healing. In it, the human body is not considered just as a mass of organs, systems and tissues; but the complex mechanism' of myriad functions taking place, both at physical and mental level, are evaluated and described. In existence for thousands of years now, the basic principle of Ayurveda has managed to remain the same. The human body is more complex than any other form of life as on date. Purusha - the human body is the aggregate of 25 elements, together with Atma - the spirit or soul. In order to explain the functional complexity of human body, Ayurveda has propounded a few basic doctrines. These doctrines visualize the functional units of the body to be formed by three Dosha (humours), seven Dhatu (tissues) and Mala (metabolic end products) which are in equilibrium.

All ayurvedic studies conducted on herbal and holistic medicine, in ancient India, were followed from the fountainhead of the two principle Ayurvedic schools. The School of Physicians (Atreya) and the School of Surgeons (Dhanvantari) epitomized the eight main areas of Ayurvedic studies and specialization, during ancient times. The details of these eight branches of this natural alternative medicine are present in the three ancient Ayurvedic texts - Charaka Samhita, Susruta Samhita and Astanga Hridaya. One of the most important principles of Ayurveda treatment is that the treatment given is not only to the ailments or the affected parts, but to the person as a whole. This creates an environment for purifying your body naturally, which eliminates all toxic imbalances from your body, enabling you to regain natural resistance from diseases and attain good health. In this section, we deal with the different principles of Ayurveda.

Bhaijasya Kalpana
Bhaisajya Kalpana is one of the most important branches in ayurveda, which deals with awareness of drugs, including identification, procurement, processing, preparation and application. The term Bhaisajya Kalpana consist of two words -Bhaishajya stands for 'medicine' and Kalpana means 'forms'.

Ayurvedic Prakruti
Ayurveda, states that the basic constitution of a human being is determined at the time of conception. This constitution is called Prakruti. The term Prakruti is derived from Sanskrit word that means, 'nature', 'creativity' or the first creation'. Prakruti is the physical and psychological constitution of the individual, which is determined on the basis of three doshas.

Rasa Shastra
Historically, Rasa Shastra or 'Vedic Chemistry' is an offshoot of Ayurveda that was developed around the period, when Buddha existed, i.e. more than 2500 years ago. Derived from Sanskrit, RASA has several meaning attached to it - "Rasyate aaswadyate iti rasa" which stands for taste, "Rasati shariire aasu prsarati it Rasa" meaning juice, "Rasati aharahargachhati iti Rasa" that stands for the first material formed after digestion or liquids, under the transportation system of the body like plasma, chyle or lymph

Shalakya Tantra
A special branch of the Ashtang Ayurvedic tree, Shalakya tantra encompasses the treatment for the diseases affecting the body parts located that are above the neck. This reveals that the branch of the science of life deals with the causes, diagnosis and curative procedures of the diseases pertaining to the head, ear, nose, eye, lips and throat. A number of methods are formulated for the treatment of the organs of the body, according to the shalakya tantra.

Ayurved ("the science of life"), the traditional medicine of India, is not a science artificially imposed upon living beings. Its basis is not in dead or organic chemical substances, or in a mechanistic and materialistic view of the human body. Ayurved is based upon a deep communion with the spirit of life itself and a profound understanding of the movement of the life- force and its different manifestations within our entire psychological system. As such, it presents a helpful alternative to the technical and mechanical model of modern medicine, the limitation of which are gradually becoming evident through time. It is a truly holistic medicine whose wealth we have just begun to explore in the Western world.

Ayurved is not merely a kind of antiquated folk medicine. It is a science in its own right. Yet it is a science based upon the observation of living being and their actual reaction to their environment. In this way, it classifies not only individuals but also foods, herbs, emotions, climates, and lifestyles in an energetic language that reflects the entire living world around us.

Ayurved possesses perhaps the longest clinical experience of any system of medicine, with a history of Ayurvedic hospitals and colleges going back for over three thousand years. It has a science of anatomy and physiology that follows a ritualistic model based upon the biological humors. It has an extensive herbal and mineral industry, including what is probably the greatest variety of herbal and pharmaceutical preparation in the world. These include herbal wines, jellies, confections, resins, balsams, pills, and an extensive system of mineral preparation. It has special clinical methods, including the use of steam therapy, oil massage, and Pancha Karma purification and rejuvenation. Perhaps most importantly, it also has a whole science of self-care, including an entire methodology of right living for optimum health and the promotion of greater awareness and creativity. All of this follows a constitutional model that considers the unique nature of the individual of the primary factor in health, not disease as an entity in itself.

While western medicine has focused upon pathogens and how to control disease from the outside, Ayurved concentrates on the individual and how to control disease through balancing the life-force within the individual, As the limitation of antibiotics are becoming evident, such regimes for strengthening our own internal or immune system may be crucial for our health as a species through the coming century

Ayurvedic Concept Of Total Health

Ayurveda India's Native Wisdom In Health And Medicine Is Quite Simple But Great Medical Science To Explain And Treat Human Bodies Normal Functioning Called Physiology, And Abnormal Functioning Termed As Pathology Or Diseases. Since The Purpose Of Treatment Is To Bring Abnormal State Of Body Back To Normal State Hence Importance Of Keeping Our Body In Balanced State And Understanding What Is Normal Health Is Quite Important. Knowing What Is Health Is Also Important Because, Because Of Wrong Eating Habits And Living Style Few Abnormal Changes Have Become Part Of Our Life And We Have Accepted Them As Such, Believing That Unhealthy Stage As Healthy One. Ayurvedic Concept of Explaining Health Described in the Form of Shloka Is
"SAM-DOSHAHA SAM AGNI SHCHA SAM DHATU MALAKRIYAH!

PRASANN ATMA INDRIYA MANAH SWASTHYA ITYABHIDHIYATE"

This Simple Shloka Is The Basis Of Ayurvedic Concept Of Health. To Understand The Meaning Of Total Health, Meaning Of Every Word Of This Shloka, Needs To Be Explained. First Word Of Shloka Is:

SAM-DOSHA, Which Is A Sanskrit Word Having Two Roots,

Sam Means Balanced Or Equilibrium State Where As Dosha Is A Complex Phenomenon, Which Includes Total Living Body In Biochemical Forms, And These Innumerable Biochemical Substances Divided Into Three Groups With Specific Or Qualities Termed As VATA, PITA AND KAPHA Expressed Through Different Features. So Sam Dosha Means Balanced State Of Biochemical Levels Of Body Like Balanced (normal) Blood Sugar, Balanced (normal) Blood Urea, Balanced (normal) Cholesterol Or Fats Etc. Modern Medical Science Labels Body As Healthy Or Diseased By Determining Levels Of Blood Biochemistry Like Normal Level Of Blood Sugar Up To 120 Mg. Per Hundred Ml. Of Blood, And Normal Blood Cholesterol (total) Up To 250 Mg% Etc. Ayurvedic System Of Medicine Explained All These Phenomena Thousands Of Years Ago In A Simplest Term Called SAM DOSHA So You Can Be Called A Healthy Person If Your Doshas Are In A State Of Equilibrium Or Balance.
Next Word In Shloka For Health Is Sam Agni - Again Sam Means Balanced And Agni Means Fire. The Term Fire Is Not That Simple As Fire From Matchstick Or Gas Burner In Kitchen. It Is A Complex Phenomenon In Our Body Having 13 Types And Most Important Of Them Is Called Jathar Agni Where Jathar Means Digestive System And AGNI Again Means Fire, So Jathar Agni Means Digestive Fire.
This Fire Is Most Important Biological Factor On Which Is Based Total Health Of Body. An Important Characteristic Features Of Fire Is Considered As Power Of Converting A Substance From One Form To Other Like Solid Into Liquid And Liquid Into Gaseous State, For Example Ice Into Water And Water Into Vapors (gas). Digestive Fire Has Greatest Power of Conversion, It Is So Powerful That It Can Convert Food, Which Is Normally a Non-living Substance into a Living Form, Which after Digestion (conversion Into Simpler Form) Gets Absorbed From Digestive System, Reaches Blood Circulation And Through Blood It Reaches Every Cell. While Reaching Brain Cells It Starts Thinking, On Reaching Cells Of Heart Muscles It Starts Pumping, While In Cells Of Kidney Tissues It Starts Filtering, Where As In The Cells Of Lungs It Starts Gaseous Exchange Etc. So The First Body Fire, Which Comes In Contact With Food, Is Called Digestive Fire It Has Great Power Of Metamorphosing Food Into Different Forms. Thus Conversion Of Food Into Living Biochemical Form Depends Upon Agni, If This Agni Is Low, Conversion In Body Will Be Slow Or Low Metabolic State, In Case This Agni Is High Or Hyper It Can Cause Burning Or Over Cooking Again A Diseased State And If This Agni Is Sam As Explained In Shloka, Body Is In A State Of Health. So To Be A Healthy Person We Must Have SAM AGNI. Therefore Every Effort Should Be Made To Be Aware Of State Of Agni And Keeping It Balanced By Wise Living Style And Eating Habits, Like Physical Activities And Avoiding Too Cold Or Too Heavy Foods That May Adversely Affect Digestive Fire.
Third Word Of Shloka Is Sam Dhatu - Made Up Of Sama And Dhatu Means Balanced Dhatus, Or Balanced Physical Constituents, Unit Of Bodies Constituent Is Cell, Which Forms Tissues, These Tissues Make Organs And Body Systems, Coordination Between Various Body System And Their External Manifestation Is Called Life Whose Study Is Called Ayurveda (Science Of Life) So For A Body To Be Healthy We Must Have Healthy Body Constituents, Every Cell, Tissue, Organ Or System Should Be Sama Or Balanced, If It Is Out Of Balance Body Is Considered As Diseased E.g. If Cells Or Tissues Are Structurally Bigger In Size, Smaller In Size Or Malformed Then Medical Term For Them Are Hypertrophy, Hypo-trophy Or Dystrophy Of Organ Respectively Which Is A State Of Disease Where As Sama Or Balanced Structure Of Dhatus Is Called A State Of Health. To Be A Healthy We Must Have Sama Dhatu Or Equilibrium Of Structural Form Of Body. Tumors In Body That Can Be Benign (noble) Or Malignant (cancerous) Are Nothing But Unbalanced Dhatus Or Asam Dhatus. It Is True For Enlargement Of Liver, Heart, and Kidneys Etc.

Next Word in Shloka for Health Is Sam Mal Kriya

Here Mal Means Wastes, Excreta Or Toxins And Kriya Means Functioning. Hence Sam Mal Kriya Means Balanced Or Normal Functioning Of Systems Of Wastes Disposal From Body Which Are Primarily Of Digestive System, Urinary System, Sweat Glands And Other Channels Of Body In Eye, Nose, Ear, Skin Etc. Which Also Excrete Wastes. If There Is No Proper Disposal Of Toxins, And Wastes From The Body They Will Adversely Affect The Body Functioning And Structure Thereby Producing Imbalance Or State Of Disease In The Body, So Disposal Of Wastes Or Toxins Is Equally Important As Is Maintenance Of Balance Of Body Functions I.e. Doshas, Or Structure I.e. Dhatus. So To Be Healthy, Have A Healthy Or Balanced Excretory System Or Sam Mal Kriya.

These Four Words SAM DOSHAS, SAM AGNI, SAM DHATU, SAM MAL KRIYA In The First Line Of Shloka Explain State Of Health Of Physical Body Only And Not That Of More Important Than Physical Body Segment Of Individuals, Another Extremely Important Plane Of The Body Because Of Which A Person Basically Falls Ill Is Mental Level. In Second Line Of Shloka That State Is Explained Through PRASANNA ATMA, INDRIYA, MANA. Prasann Means Pleased Atma Means Pleased Soul, Indriyas Are Sense Organs And Mann Is Mind. Atma Is Beyond Attributes And Is A Spiritual State, Which Acts As Observer It Cannot Be Influenced Destroyed Or Created. Indriya I.e. Sense Organs And Mann I.e. Mind Are Interlinked. Sense Organ After Coming In Contact With Their Objects, Transfer Messages To Mind Which Analyses Them And Put Impact On Various Body Organs Causing Their Normal Or Abnormal Functioning Producing Health Or Illness. So State Of Health Totally Depends Upon State Of Mind Influenced Through Sense Organs Or Indriyas. Sense Organs And Mind If Pleased Or Prasann Will Create Health And If Not Prasann (pleased) Will Cause Illness. It Can Be Now Concluded That
"SAM-DOSHAHA SAM AGNI SAM DHATU MALAKRIYAH!

PRASANN ATMA INDRIYA MANAH SWASTHYA ITYABHIDHIYATE!!"

Is A Holistic Approach Towards Explanation Of Health In Total Where Mind And Body Are Considered Inseparable And Interdependent Entity. Surprisingly World Health Organization (W.H.O.) Concept Of Health Which Is Read As Health Is A State Of Complete Physical, Mental & Social Well Being And Not Merely The Absence Of Disease Or Infirmity; Is Almost Same As Defined In Ayurveda Which Reflects Richness Of India's Native Wisdom In Health And Medicine I.e. Ayurveda, Science Of Life.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has

acknowledged Ayurveda as a safe and effective

means of correcting common health problems. Not

only are colleges in Britain and India now

teaching this science, health care specialists in

the US are also being taught Ayurveda.

According to the Ayurveda body types definition,

every human body is governed by three primary

qualities or principles called doshas, derived

from the five elements. These are Vata (space and

air), Pitha (fire and water) and Kapha (water and

earth), and the Ayurvedic recommendations will

vary according to a person’s doshas. It is almost

unheard of for people to have equal proportions

of all doshas and it is when these doshas fall

out of balance that the body experiences energy

loss, discomfort, pain, and ultimately disease.

health and balance within their beings; there is

a concurrent and inherent connection between the

universe and a human person. Unlike the animal

kingdom, humans live in a more complicated nature

where they are perpetually exposed to environment

change: weather, society and economy, lifestyle,

diet, work, financial status, emotions and

relationships. Any of these environment changes

can easily tip the balance and jeopardize the

individual’s state of mind, body and soul. Hence,

the meaning of Ayurveda; two Sanskrit words: Ayu

which means life and Veda which means the

knowledge of. To know about life is Ayurveda and

according to the ancient Ayurvedic scholar

Charaka, "ayu" is comprised of four essential

parts: the combination of mind, body, senses and

the soul. With Ayurveda healing, the purpose is

not just to bring remedy to an illness but also

to bring harmony to out-out-balance factors.

In Ayurveda, when the body doshic balance of

vata-pitta-kapha is agitated or in disorder, or

if any of these types are accumulated, the

individual may become unwell. Ayurveda philosophy

views a person as a unique individual made up of

five primary elements: ether (space), air, fire,

water, and earth just as in nature. Should any of

these elements be present in the environment,

they will have an impact on us. Two examples are

the weather and the food in our diet.

In addition, certain elements are seen to have an

ability to combine and form various physiological

functions as follows:

· Ether + air = Vata dosha
Vata governs the principle of movement and

therefore can be seen as the force which directs

nerve impulses, circulation, respiration, and

elimination.

· Fire + water = Pitta dosha
Pitta is the process of transformation or

metabolism, metabolism in the organ and tissue

systems as well as cellular metabolism. An

example is the transformation of foods into

nutrients that our bodies can assimilate.

· Water + earth = Kapha dosha
Kapha is responsible for growth, adding structure

unit by unit and protection. Types of Kapha found

in the body, for example, are cerebral-spinal

fluid protecting the brain and spinal column and

the mucousal lining of the stomach protecting the

tissues.

Ayurveda sees each person as a special mixture

because ratios of the doshas: vata, pitta and

kapha vary in each individual, giving us

diversity and uniqueness.

Ayurveda healing first deal with any emergency or

life-threatening symptoms like high fever or

asthma attacks, and then look into the problem of

the fundamental causes. Remedies like herbal

medication, changes in diet and nutrition,

cleansing procedures like bathing, yoga postures,

exercises and even breathing techniques in

Ayurveda, remove symptoms and eradicate the

underlying causes of a disease or health problem.

If these underlying problems are not dealt with,

it will manifest again either in the same way or

another form.

Ayuveda disease management
Chikitsa, also known as disease management, is

the Ayurveda approach to restoring health. There

are eight traditional components in the complete

healing program and its purpose are:

· Identify health problem
· Eliminate underlying cause of illness
· Purify the body
· Reestablish and restore balance
· Strengthens and revitalizes affected organs,

tissues and system to prevent recurrence

The 8 Essential Components of Ayurveda Healing

are:

1. Locate person’s constitution (prakruti): vata,

pitta or kapha
2. Locate the present imbalance of doshas in the

body (vikruti)
3. Find the reason and causes of illness such as

lifestyle, diet, genetic predisposition,

emotional and relationship factors, psychological

stress, etc.
4. Initial treatment is to remove the cause
5. Give appropriate regimen like exercise, yoga,

diet and relaxation accordingly to person’s

constitution, vikruti and environemnt changes,

etc.
6. Detoxification treatment by either:
· elimination like panchakarma or shodana, or
· palliation like shamana
7. Rejuvenate the body in general in order to

strenthen specific ogans and tissues
8. Two types of therapies based on the principle

that opposite qualities give balance:

· Antagonistic therapy to the provoked dosha
· Antagonistic therapy to the disease

When a person becomes ill, the illness is not

likely completely cured unless you change

behaviours that caused it such as poor diet,

inadequate exercise, bad lifestyle habits like

excessive alcohol or smoking, even stress (caused

by work or other factors), unresolved

relationships and related psychological factors.

Getting to the bottom of these factors is

important in the process of healing and complete

recovery.

Diagnosis:
It is necessary to identify the health problem

discriminatingly and determine whether the

constitutional condition of the individual. The

specific treatment will not be benefit the person

if diagnosis is inaccurate. So it is important to

look at all symptoms physically to help you

determine if it is a vata, pitta or kapha

condition.

Treatment:
Once the condition is diagnosed, the treatment is

given according to constitutional type. Some

general treatment can benefit all types of

constitutional types.

Ayurveda remedies are simple and natural, using

common household herbs and strategies such as a

warm bath and soothing herbal tea. Common

Ayurveda herbs are also recommended in the

remedies. There are several remedies for each

health condition. Every person is unique and the

remedies will work differently so you do not have

to try all of them. Some may work better for you

and not others. If it dissolves the problem,

stick with it, otherwise, try the other

approaches.

Always keep a fundamental therapeutic guideline

when using self-treatments like Ayurveda

principles and remedies. If they do not work, do

not be discouraged. Sometimes it’s hard to

determine constitutional type and your diagnosis

may not be correct. Reassess your illness and the

reactions to the approach taken, and treat your

actual condition. Its very rare but possible that

your illness may not coincide with your own

constitutional type. So be discerning to select

the right remedy that fits your symptoms of your

sickness, and not just body type. However, if

your health condition is critical or fatal,

consult your doctor immediately. Should your

problem be chronic, give some time for healing

and it may be months before symptoms diminish.

Ayurveda is not a quick remedy so allow your body

healing mechanism to process at its own pace,

momentum and duration.

In Ayurveda healing, each condition comes with

not only medication and herbal formulas, but also

other measures like special diets, exercise,

yoga, relaxation therapies like massages, tea and

healing paste, among others, to provide healing.

Together with medicinal treatment, changing your

daily routine can help you improve health and

live harmoniously in your surrounding with

nature. The human body is always resilient,

working to restore balance and complete health so

the natural process of healing recommended in

Ayurveda will support the body and bring benefits

in keeping you in the pink of health and your

life in harmony.
Ayurveda

Each element is represented in the human body.

For instance, bones and teeth are earth, blood

and lymph are water, the metabolism is fire,

oxygen is air, and ether is the spaces found

between matter, represented best by vibration or

sound.

These five elements pair up to form three forces,

or 'doshas', within the body:

Vata - made up of air and ether. Responsible for

such functions as the heart beat, locomotion and

the workings of the nervous system. Too much Vata

can lead to symptoms such as high blood pressure,

while too little can result in constipation.

Pitta - made up of fire and water. Responsible

for such functions as digestion and temperature.

Too much Pitta can lead to symptoms such as

ulcers and acne, while too little can result in

indigestion.

Kapha - made up of water and earth. Responsible

for such functions as immunity. Too much Kapha

can lead to symptoms such as a runny nose or

productive cough, while too little can result in

poor concentration.

An individual blend of doshas:

Each person has an individual blend of the three

doshas, with one or sometimes two doshas

predominating. Someone who is mainly a Vata type

will be creative and nervous; a Pitta type,

confident and competitive; and a Kapha type will

be patient and possessive. A person's dosha

balance can be upset by a variety of factors

including diet, stress, emotional upset and the

weather.

Doshas and their effect on prana:

An Ayurvedic practitioner aims to balance the

patient's doshas in order to increase their life

energy, or 'prana'. Only then is good health

possible. We take up prana from the food we eat

and the air we breathe. Food can affect a

person's dosha levels because food is also made

up of the five basic elements and can be

predominantly vata, pitta or kapha.

A range of therapies:

An Ayurvedic practitioner uses a range of healing

therapies to balance the doshas and bolster

prana, including:
Acupuncture
Aromatherapy
Diet
Herbal medicine
Massage
Meditation
Pancha karma - (lit. 'five therapies') a

specialised treatment consisting of five

therapies resulting in internal detoxification

and balancing of the doshas or the three energies

(Vata, Pitta and Kapha)
Sound therapy, or the use of mantras
Yoga.

Panchakarma Treatment

Ayurveda emphasizes preventative and healing

therapies, along with myriad methods of

purification and rejuvenation of the body, mind

and soul. Apart from being a healing system, it

is a science that tells us the art of appropriate

living. It tells us how to achieve longevity and

live a life that is free of diseases. Panchakarma

is Ayurveda's one of the ancient and important

purification and detoxification treatments. In

Sanskrit, the word 'Panchakarma literally means

"five therapies", which suggests that it is a

comprehensive system of knowledge and practices

to purify the body of toxins and restore it to

balance with the law of Mother Nature.

The five therapeutic means of eliminating toxins

from the body, which constitute the Panchakarma,

are Vamana, Virechana, Nasya, Basti and

Raktamoskshana. The therapies deal with stress

related problems and the toxins that may trigger

an ailment, at the same time, they concentrate on

creating a balance between the doshas (energies

that govern all biological functions). Although

Panchakarma is a highly effective therapy, it can

remain ineffective, if the person doesn't follow

a special detoxification diet, along with the

treatments. In this section, we have provided

comprehensive information on Panchakarma therapy

and its significance in Ayurveda.

Purification Therapy Basti Karma
One of the main procedures of Panchakarma

Chikitsa, Basti karma concentrates on the

elimination of the loosened vata dosha out

through the rectum. The treatment involves the

introduction of medicinal substances, such as,

herbal oils and decoctions in a liquid medium,

into the rectum of the person. This is because

vata is predominantly located in the colon and

bones.

Nasya Karma
One of the Panchakarmas mentioned in Ayurveda,

Nasya therapy is a process wherein the drug

(herbalized oils and liquid medicines) is

administered through the nostrils. Since nose is

the gateway of the head, the therapy is highly

effective in curing a number of diseases

pertaining to the head, if it is performed

systematically.

Raktamoksha Therapy (Blood Letting)
Raktamoksha therapy is one of the Panchakarmas of

Ayurveda. Literally meaning Blood Letting,

Raktamoksha is performed to eliminate the toxins

from the bloodstream through the gastrointestinal

tract. It is a safe, painless and highly

effective form of Panchakarma. Raktamoksha

entails the refinement of blood, hence

administered to treat disorders pertaining to

skin, such as urticaria, rash, eczema, acne,

scabies, leucoderma, chronic itching and hives.

Vamana Therapy
The kapha toxins accumulated in the body and the

respiratory tract are effectively removed by

Vamana, one of the five therapies of Panchakarma

in Ayurveda. Vamana is therapeutic vomiting,

which is a medicated emesis therapy. People with

high imbalance of kapha are given this type of

treatment, which loosens and mobilizes the

toxins, in an effort to eliminate them from the

body.

Virechana Therapy
Ayurveda, the science of life, emphasizes on the

adoption of a number of preventative and healing

therapies, which can purify and rejuvenate the

body, mind and soul. The medicinal form of

science is not just a healing system, but also an

art of appropriate, healthy and disease-free

living. It aims at increasing the longevity of

people of all ages.

Panchakarma Program

An ancient cleansing ritual that is apt in today's modern world also….

Panchakarma is an ancient Indian Ayurvedic cleansing and rejuvenation practice that works to clear out excesses in the mind and the body. Panchakarma means "five actions" which remove toxins built up in the body over a period. It instills a sense of balance and calms right down to the cellular level.

Panchakarma is an individualised therapy that remains as faithful to the ancient tradition as possible. It's a system based on natural holistic healing by strengthening the body and allowing natural healing mechanisms to work to their fullest potential.

The physician determines the kind of procedure and the types of medicines to be used after examining the patient. It is not necessary that a patient should undergo all the five procedures of treatment used in Panchakarma. Panchakarma should not be administered to those below seven years and those above 80 years.

Medicated Emesis (Vamana), Medicated Purgation (Virechana), Nasal Medication (Nasya), Medicated Enema (Vasti) and Blood Letting (Raktamoksha) are the five purification procedures for removing accumulated toxins and other waste materials in the body.

Let us look, little in detail, what these procedures involve.

1. Pre-Treatment (Poorva Karma):
These are certain procedures followed for preparing the body before doing Panchakarma for the total elimination of toxic deposit. These procedures are done for seven days. Snehana (Oleation) and Swedhana (Sweating) are the two steps involved in pre-treatment for Panchakarma. Swedhana is followed for two days after Snehana. After completion of these courses, the patient is advised to take rest, avoid cold, take warm baths, get adequate fresh air and eat easily digestible food.

The pre-treatment is followed by the purgation or purification therapy. Purification is done in two ways - Emesis (Vamanam) and Medicated Enema or Decoction (Vasti). This is done for three days.

2. Therapeutic Vomiting (Emesis or Vamana)
In this process excited and vitiated humors are removed from the upper part of the body by way of vomiting. Vomiting is induced with herbal emetic substances for the purpose of eliminating vitiated Kapha and Pitta. Emesis is effective in the treatment of disorders like asthma, bronchitis, sinusitis, indigestion, epilepsy, excessive salivation and diseases in fatty tissue and muscular tissue like hemorrhoids and tumors of fat and muscle. The quantity should be given till the patient's stomach is completely full.

3. Purgation Therapy (Virechana)
Virechana is the cleansing of the Pitta and the purification of blood toxins. Generally, it is administered for three days after the Vamana treatment but this may vary. If Vamana therapy is not needed, Virechana can be administered directly after Poorva Karma. Virechana cleanses the sweat glands, small intestine, colon, kidneys, stomach, liver and spleen. A number of effective and safe herbs can be used as a laxative. Virechana is used for treatment of skin diseases.

4. Medicated Enema (Vasti)
Medicated enema is universally regarded as the most important procedure in Panchakarma therapy since it removes the excess Vata Dosha (humor) from the entire body. Medicated enema is mainly of two types.

5. Nasal Medication (Nasya)
Nasya is the procedure in which medications are administered through the nostrils in order to purify the head and neck region. The medicines used for this procedure are oil, pastes, powers, plant juice, decoctions, infusions and even smoke.

6. Rakta Moksha (Blood letting)
Bloodletting is an invasive procedure; hence only a licensed physician should administer it. This treatment is used only for the treatment of blood related and Pitta related disorders such as skin, liver spleen and conditions like gout, headaches and hypertension. Jalauka (Leeches) is the most renowned method of blood letting and the mildest of all types. It is a safe, painless and effective form of treatment

Rheumatic Diseases

Rheumatic problems are reflected as pains in the body. It could be in the joints or muscles. Pains can be associated with swelling and fever. Rheumatic complaints are called Vata Vikara in Ayurveda. The body is made of three elements or humors, viz., Vata, Pitta and Kapha. Vata Vikara occurs due to the vitiation of the elements. Vata relates to bones and nerves. There are different varieties of rheumatic ailments. Amongst them Arthritis, Spondylitis, Paralysis, Sciatica, Frozen Shoulder, Slip Disc, Gout are the most destructive diseases. These affect the bones, nerves and muscles.

Arthritis is very common, mainly of two types, Osteo Arthritis and Rheumatoid Arthritis. Rheumatoid Arthritis affects all the joints in the body. Osteo Arthritis mostly affects big joints. When the sino vial fluid gets degenerated it affects the easy movements of the joints. The bones without the fluid start touching each other causing inflammation and swelling. In Rheumatoid Arthritis inflammation comes first with fever. It affects almost all the joints and the blood stream. Sinusitis, Gout, Calcaneal spur etc. are other types of Arthritis. If not treated properly, these can lead to deformity of the joints. Kerala Ayurvedic treatments are very effective in curing all rheumatic problems.

Spondylitis and Slip Disc are common mostly with people engaged in white collar jobs. Their sitting posture and work tensions are the root cause of this deadly disease. It is caused due to the degenerative change in the vertebra from lumbar to cervical. If you have a pain in the neck, a radiating pain over the back, or an unmovable pain at the lower back, you need not waste your time. You better contact an efficient Ayurvedic Physician. Earlier, the better. If ignored, it will lead to mental and physical sickness. One would loose confidence leading to depression.

There is no treatment in Allopathy for these illnesses except pain killers or surgery. Ayurveda is the best option for these diseases as it works scientifically without any toxic after effects. Excessive intake of certain food materials like salt, oil, alcohol etc. excessive traveling and sedentary life style will vitiate the balance of the body and block the vital channels.

Health Promotion & Rejuvenation

Health, strength, intelligence and beauty deteriorate as man gets older. Rejuvenation involves reversing the aging process and regaining the youth through Ayurveda. The rejuvenation packages help to strengthen skin tissues and promote ideal health and longevity. Rejuvenation is explored in the form of body massages, medicines and medicated steam as well as herbal baths. In doing this, one has to be extremely cautious in selecting the right authentic treatment.

The package comprises of traditional Ayurvedic treatments, comprising of synchronized special massage. herbal steam bath, along with yogic exercises, a balanced diet and individual health counseling. The package will be tailor-made and personlised to meet the specific health needs of each person. This carefully planned health program is directed towards improving vigor and vitality. It will also go a long way to tone up the skin and improve complexion. That is, it is a return to the eternal youth.

Pre & Post Delivery care

Regular and early medical consultation, in the cases of pregnancy, enables the doctor to watch for abnormal changes in blood pressure, blood, urine, weight etc. and foresee any potential problems. Following symptoms require immediate medical attention.

Bleeding from vagina, rectum, nipple, or lungs while coughing;
Sudden escape of fluid from the vagina;
Severe or repeated headaches;
Sharp or prolonged pain in abdomen;
Severe or continued vomiting;
Chills or fever;
Sudden gain of huge weight;
Swelling or puffiness in face or hands;
Persistent severe swelling of the legs;
Dimness, blurred vision, flashes of light, or spots before your eyes.
The need for iron during pregnancy is more. This should be supplemented by fluids and roughage in diet. Both mother and child need nourishment and liquids. The risk of bladder or kidney infection during pregnancy is also averted if the amount of fluid intake is increased every day.

Health care for children

The strength of children to combat diseases is weaker than that of the adults and hence they cannot withstand strong medicines. Also, a child is not capable of expressing discomfort clearly and it becomes all the more important to take utmost care in choosing remedies for children.

Ayurveda prescribes mild remedies for children which ensure protection of their delicate organs. Ayurvedic medicines are natural and harmless and save the children from early exposure to aggressive medication.
Navarakizhi

Children also suffer psychologically due to lack of physical love. Ayurvedic Child Care addresses all the physical and psychological problems of children by advocating simple natural remedies to treat them.

Obesity and Weight Problems

Incomplete digestion and assimilation form a toxic residue in the system. Accumulation of more toxic waste opens up the flood gates for obesity and excess weight. The obese suffer from reduced longevity, fatigue, incompetent sexual intercourse, poor body odor, copious sweating, ravenous hunger and severe thirst.

Food which are rich, sweet, cold and fatty offer unobstructed invitation to obesity. Fatty food is addictive and is difficult to dispense with easily. A disciplined lifestyle ensuring right metabolic level and regular bowel movement goes a long way in keeping obesity at bay.

Healthy combination of food creates the right environment for weight loss. More energy and longer time is required to break food consumed indiscriminately without healthy combination.

Fermentation of carbohydrates and putrefied protein is caused by such haphazard food consumption. For instance, if fruit is not taken on empty stomach but is consumed after a meal, the whole meal rots, ferments and turns into acid. Water transports nutritients to all the cells and also removes toxic wastes. Hence considerable intake of liquids during the course of the day is of paramount importance.

The elimination of toxins from the body takes months or years unless we take steps to speed up the process by proper food habits. Panchakarma Therapies in Ayurveda  offer excellent management for detoxification. The balance of the unsettled humors (doshas) is established by detoxifying and purifying the body through Panchakarma. The slimming or reducing measures involves an austere regimen that covers diet, medications and a wide range of activities. Deep dry massage using herbal powders can also be employed for reducing obesity, affording mobility to joints, strengthening muscles and refreshing the body.

Skin and Hair care

Premature aging occurs if the skin is not cared properly and neglected. Regular consumption of milk, honey and yogurt are good nourishment for skin and prevents premature aging.
Ayurveda offers excellent remedy for preventing and curing some of the common skin ailments.

Acne and Pimples - The aggravation of ‘Tridosha’ or three energies of the body result in the occurrence of acne, pimples and blackheads. Excessive intake of alcohol, tea, coffee, spicy, oily and fried foods on the one hand and stress, tension, pollution and exposure to chemicals on the other aggravate ‘Pitta Dosha’ and result in acne, boils, pimples and rashes.

Pigmentation - Blackening, pigmentation and discoloration of skin occurs due to imbalance of ‘Bhrajaka Pitta’ aggravated by excessive exposure to the sun, irregular eating and sleeping habits and improper food intake.

Premature Aging - ’Vata Dosha’ increases with age and causes dryness and wrinkling of the skin. Factors like excessive thinking, stress, tension, over work, strain, irregular sleeping and eating habits and intake of cold or dry foods enhance aging. Foods containing artificial flavors, colors, preservatives and chemicals also aggravate the ’Vata Dosha’ and pace up the aging.

Hair Care
Diet and lifestyle are two major factors that influence the health of the hair. Poor diet, illness and deficiencies of any particular vitamin and mineral affect the quality of hair and problems like dandruff, thinning, balding, premature graying etc. crop up.

Regularly cleaning and brushing the hair is very important. When the hairs are brushed, oil-producing glands in the scalp get stimulated. This natural oil makes the hair glossy and healthy. To give extra shine to the hair, after washing rinse the hair with some lemon juice mixed in a cup of warm water.

Stress

Stress may be defined as non-specific response to the varying demands on the body. Stress is critically related to our physical, mental and emotional health. Mostly, stress is referred to as a negative factor posing health hazard. However, stress can help to keep a person alert and motivated to accomplish more than what would otherwise be achieved. A lack of stress can just be as much of a problem as too much of stress.

Stress is influenced by external and internal factors. The physical and social environments we live in are external in nature and psychological factors related to any given person shall be purely internal.

External factors aggravating the stress could be due to polluted air, water or environment, excessive noise, unreasonable or arrogant encounters from people around us, tragic or shocking events occurred in our life, unexpected break down of apparatus in use etc.

Internal factors leading to stress revolves around our personal traits and specific life style. Extreme sense of analysis, pessimistic and negative thinking, auto suggestion, self-criticism, over working, sleeplessness, stubbornness in attitude, perfectionism etc are some of the instances of internal factors.

Though the body is amazingly adaptable to the stress, the immune mechanism fails after a certain level when overwork and exhaustion dominate. Stress management involves monitoring the stress levels and the technique of overcoming excess stress. Most stress is self generated and needs looking inwardly – this is where stress management assumes a significant role in ensuring a healthy and happy living. The goal in treating stress is not to eliminate it but to learn how to manage it and use it to our advantage. As we strive to find an optimal level of stress in our lives we will start to see that proper amounts of stress motivate us to excel in our performance and disproportional levels of stress can suffocate and overwhelm us.

Stress affects each individual differently, and the body responds differently. Stress is a complex phenomenon. The wear and tear of everyday life has taken a toll on us, with distress signals appearing in a variety of ways; anger, anxiety, depression, fatigue, negativity, irritability, hypertension, and even heart attacks. A sense of being besieged, exploding easily at seemingly inconsequential things, frequent headaches and gastrointestinal disturbances, weight loss, sleeplessness and depression are the warning signals for stress. Shortness of breath, suspiciousness and helplessness also identify a stressed out person. Take a close look at what is said about you in your MAPP, and what you are naturally motivated towards your work. You might be one of those stressed out persons requiring immediate attention.

Yoga & stress relief

The word Yoga means "to join or unite” and it is the union of physical, mental and spiritual self. Yoga is totally different from the aerobics and other weight training exercises as it brings the mind and body into a mutual state of well being, balance, and alertness.

Yoga not only involves practicing ‘asanas’ (assuming physical postures) and different breathing techniques but also inculcate balance in life through self restraints, regulated food habits, rest, meditation, and cultivation of correct thought and action. Yoga comprises of following eight steps:

1. Yama (Disciplines for actions)
2. Niyama (Injunctions for inaction)
3. Asanas (Various Body Postures)
4. Pranayama (Breathing Techniques)
5. Pratyahara (Restraints from sensual enjoyment)
6. Dhahran (Focusing of Mind)
7. Dhyana (Meditation)
8. Samadhi (Super Consciousness)

The Yoga postures are designed in such a way so as to put pressure on the glandular system of the body, which in turn increases the efficiency and health of the human being. The breathing techniques of Yoga are based on the concept that breath is the source of life in the body. With the help of various breathing techniques the toxins in the body are removed by oxygenating the blood and
improving the physical and mental health of the person. These two structures prepare the body and mind for meditation. With the help of meditation the aspirant can achieve a quiet mind and stress and tension free life.

The Yogic Practices sharpen the faculties with an integrated personality development at physical, mental, emotional, intellectual and spiritual level. At physical level, disease free body is conferred with a powerful immune system. The power of imagination, creativity and steadfastness is established by Yoga at mental level. At emotional level, Yoga consciously expands and diffuses the overtures of sensitization whereby control over behaviour is regulated at critical situations. Intellectual boon conferred by Yoga is not only of intense sharpening of the intellect but also include a mastery to come out of the enslaving power of the sharpened intellect. Ultimately, Yoga prepares the aspirant to evolve spiritually by recognising the self in all the creatures and experience the bliss by feeling oneness with all.

Ayurveda Kendra has ideal blend of Yogic Programs as part of the ‘Corporate Stress Management’ programs involving Ayurvedic tours and packages.
